Parking , the 2023 Tamil film starring actors Harish Kalyan and MS Bhaskar in the lead roles, has completed two years since its release. The film directed by Ramkumar Balakrishnan in his debut, won two National Film Awards this year. On its second anniversary, Ramkumar talks to OTTplay about the film, in this quick conversation. The film is available on JioHotstar via OTTplay Premium.

Parking is a Tamil film which explores the male psyche and ego through the perspective of two men. The film stars Harish Kalyan and MS Bhaskar in the lead roles. Parking not only won critical acclaim, but also received two National Film Awards. For those who have not watched the film, it revolves around the clash between two neighbours, a newly married man and much-older government employee, over a parking lot.
“Before Parking, I did not have any idea of what kind of director I would become, or even have the faith if I would become one. But after Parking, the responsibilities increased. There are some expectations on me now and we need to make a good film while telling something responsible to the society. Parking has made me a responsible director,” Ramkumar says.
The director continues, “I had some thoughts if I could tell this line into a film for two hours. I had a confusion, but I did not stress on it. But even when I was working as an AD then, this idea used to keep running at the back of my mind. It was easy to write the first half for me, but I was determined that I cannot sustain the second half with just the parking element. I need to bring something that will not bore the audience. That is when I began to explore on personal ego, and it eased me into the rest of story.”

The film bagged two National Film Awards earlier this year, one for Best Supporting Actor (Male) – MS Bhaskar, and Best Screenplay Writing for Ramkumar. Calling it a surreal moment, Ramkumar says, “Even when we applied for the awards, I did not have any thought about it and we moved on. But when we heard the news, it was like a moment of circle. I am used to watching awards every year on the TV, and this time, when we got it, it was just a moment of happiness. Moreover, when they said that this film deserved the award, it only made me happier.”
Ramkumar is working on his next, but says that it will take some time for official announcement to come. “Not anything confirmed for now, but I am working to do by best and be on par if not more than Parking.”
