At this year's 70th National Film Awards announced in August, Ponniyin Selvan won big and bagged awards in multiple categories. It won in categories, including Best Film, Best Composer for AR Rahman, and Best Cinematographer for Ravi Varman.

Backed by Lyca Productions, the music is scored by AR Rahman. The period drama traces the lives of rulers of the Chola dynasty and the drama that unfolded between various power authorities. Mostly fictionalized, the film drew inspiration from novelist Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan and some real-life characters.

The film was lauded for its aesthetically pleasing performances of the lead actors and its narration. Although the film received criticism for changing parts of the original story, the movie was well-received by audiences and critics.
