Jude Anthany Joseph and Co. sprung a pleasant surprise on everyone with the runaway success of their latest outing 2018. What's been termed a survival thriller that recounts the harrowing times of the 2018 Kerala floods, the film has been garnering tremendous praise from all corners with the cinematography and the production design turning out to be the main highlights. Aided by credible performances of cast members Kunchako Boban, Tovino Thomas, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Lal and others, 2018 has emerged as the biggest sleeper hit of the season.

And the film's box office exploits extend beyond Kerala with the neighbouring state of Karnataka proving to be equally welcoming. According to the latest reports, 2018 has grossed over Rs. 3.20 crores in Karnataka and has gone past previous Malayalam biggies such as Romancham, Bangalore Days, Premam and Kumbalangi Nights in its pursuits. As of May 15, 2018 stands in the fourth position on the list of highest-grossing Malayalam films in Karnataka, with the Mohanlal starrer Lucifer occupying the top spot.

The fact that Kerala shares its geographical border with Karnataka has served as a major contributor over the years for Malayalam films to thrive in the state, with the multicultural environment of the capital city of Bengaluru, too, being a huge factor. Lucifer, the second highest-grossing Malayalam film in history, has reportedly grossed over Rs. 4.5 crores in Karnataka with the Dulquer Salman-led Kurup taking the second spot with Rs. 3.6 crores. Amal Neerad's gangster drama starring Mammootty, Bheeshma Parvam, has collected close to Rs. 3.50 crores in Karnataka.

As far as 2018 is concerned, the film's overseas box office performance has yielded excellent results with more than Rs. 47 crores (gross) collections. The worldwide collections (including domestic) are inching fast towards the Rs. 100 crore mark and should the trend remain consistent, 2018 has every chance of ending up as the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time.
