The Malayalam film 2018, which looks back at the devastating floods that hit Kerala five years ago and saw people across socio, economic and religious segments come together to help each other in this time of distress, released in theatres on May 5. Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, the film, which boasts an ensemble cast including Tovino Thomas, Aparna Balamurali, Lal, Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Indrans, Vineeth Sreenivasan and Tanvi Ram, among others, came to theatres across the country in Malayalam only and has in the last two weeks amassed well over Rs 100 crore at the box office.
Buoyed by the film’s grand box office reception, the team is now set to give 2018 a proper pan-India release with dubbed versions in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu set to be in theatres shortly. The trailer of the Kannada version was released today and netizens have been all praise for the quality of dubbing. Some have also likened the film to last year’s Kantara, a rooted tale that was released only in Kannada initially, but found so much love from audiences that the makers had to release the dubbed versions in theatres soon after. 2018, say netizens, is following the same path, bringing the dubbed versions to audiences after a lot of positive word-of-mouth publicity has come its way.

It was also said that since the film made Rs 100 crore from the Malayalam version only and is still going strong in theatres, it is now time for it to go on a pan-India box office rampage. Netizens thanked the film team for the quick turnaround in dubbing the film and doing a great job at it. Several of the comments to the trailer were promises to watch the film in its Kannada version when it comes. The makers did not reveal a date, and only teased that it is coming soon.
