Days before the OTT release of director Jude Anthany Joseph’s 2018, the cast and crew of the film celebrated its massive theatrical success in the UAE. The filmmaker was joined by his lead actors Tovino Thomas, Asif Ali, Narain, Kunchacko Boban, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Aparna Balamurali and Tanvi Ram at an event in Abu Dhabi this weekend.
Tovino, who returned to the venue three years after the promotions of Lucifer, said, “This was Jude ettan’s dream and all of us actors are glad to be part of his vision. The reason this film has become such a huge hit is because the producers and all of us trusted in that vision and did our work with pure intentions. The audiences were the ones that actually made it a superhit.”
The film has grossed over Rs 175 crore in worldwide box office earnings, making it the highest grossing Malayalam movie ever. It toppled the records held by Mohanlal’s Pulimurugan and Lucifer in the process.
Tovino, who played an ex-Army officer Anoop in the disaster drama based on the 2018 Kerala floods, said, “I have been able to experience a lot of love from people across States and countries and I know it’s because of the character that I have played and how much it had struck a chord with the audience.”
Kunchacko, who had played the role of a government official in the film, said that his biggest joy of working in the movie was that he could be part of a film “with a lot of my friends, even though I couldn’t necessarily share screen space with them”. “I hope we can come up with more such films to showcase to world cinema what we are capable of,” he said.
2018, which also has Lal and Kalaiyarasan in pivotal roles, is all set to begin streaming on Sony LIV and OTTplay Premium from June 7.
