26 years of DDLJ: A short film pays tribute to Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan starrer timeless romantic film

On the 26th anniversary of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, the content creator Gorilla Shorts releases its sixth short film from the anthology series Offbeats S1 paying tribute to the timeless classic film. The short film Maratha Mandir Cinema brings forth the impact that the film had created on one of the most neglected sections of society - sex workers. 

The film DDLJ still holds a special place in the hearts of sex workers who find solace and escapism from the flesh trade with this film. The end credits of the short read that the film was brought back to Maratha Mandir Cinema hall after the demand by sex workers. That's the impact the film has left on the audience of the Mumbai's Red light area Kamathipura. Watch the 13-minute film here: 

The film directed by Pankaj Dubey stars Swanand Kirkire and Sarika. It is about a girl Simran, who is born and brought up in Kamathipura, and does not miss the DDLJ show even for a single day at Maratha Mandir Cinema. The film inspires her to live her life on her own terms. It liberates her as she is seen running away from the flesh trade stating 'Simran ja rahi hai apni zindagi jeene'. The Filmfare nominated short film has travelled to Cannes and Vancouver and has gathered praises for its engaging and entertaining story.

The film DDLJ that starred Kajol, Shah Rukh Khan and Amrish Puri, has created history in the Indian cinema by running for the longest time in theatres. The film continued to be screened even after 25 years of its release at Maratha Mandir, until the onset of the pandemic in the country.
