It has been 32 years since Annaamalai, the 1992 hit Rajinikanth film, was first released in theatres. The commercial film, which became a blockbuster success at the time of its release, is directed by Suresh Krissna. So, it is the perfect time to rewatch the film. 32 years of Annaamalai

Rajinikanth is undoubtedly one of the biggest stars of Indian cinema. However, one such film that made him one is Annaamalai, which has recently completed 32 years since its release in 1992. The film is available for streaming on Lionsgate Play and OTTplay Premium.

The film is produced by Kavithalayaa Productions and is a remake of the 1987 Hindi film Khudgarz, which itself is based on Jeffrey Archer's 1979 novel Kane and Abel. Annaamalai stars Rajinikanth, Khushbu, late Sarath Babu, Radha Ravi and others.

Annaamalai revolves around two childhood best friends who grow up to be inseparable despite their opposite economic backgrounds. While Annaamalai is a poor milkman, Ashok is the heir to a wealthy chain of hotels. With the latter's father attempting to create a rift between the two. As he eventually succeeds, the rest of the film is about how the two friends reconcile.

Annaamalai was released on June 27, 1992, and went on to become a success after it ran for 175 days in theatres. The film was subsequently remade in Telugu as Kondapalli Raja and Kannada as Gokarna. The music for Annaamalai was composed by Deva. Songs such as Vanthenda Paalkaran, and Kondayil Thaazham Poo went on to become chartbusters. The film was shot by cinematographer PS Prakash and editing was handled by Ganesh Kumar.

Meanwhile, Rajinikanth, who was last seen in Jailer, is currently working with filmmaker TJ Gnanavel in Vettaiyan. The film is set to hit theatres in October. The actor is also teaming up with director Lokesh Kanagaraj for Coolie.
