Malayalam cinema kicked off the New Year with Tovino Thomas’ Identity. As we enter the second week of 2025, we are getting more exciting Malayalam films to watch on OTT as well as in theatres. Sookshmadarshini leads the buzz with its much-awaited OTT release, while Rekhachithram and Ennu Swantham Punyalan hit the big screens. Nazriya Nazim fully justified her ‘breaks’ from the Malayalam silver screen as she made a smash comeback with Sookshmadarshini. The Bangalore Days actress, who has been part of films as a producer, returned to the front of the camera with this Basil Joseph-starrer. The film tells the tale of Priyadarshini and her new neighbour Manuel, as the inquisitive homemaker believes he is not what he appears to be. Sookshmadarshini is one of the most-awaited Malayalam films on OTT and should definitely be there on your weekend watchlist.

Asif Ali teamed up with the young Anaswara Rajan for Rekhachithram, which has opened to largely positive reviews. The film features Asif Ali as a cop who strives to unravel a murder mystery. There is a lot of buzz around the Malayalam megastar making a cameo in the Asif Ali-starrer. Well, we are not giving you any spoilers, watch Rekhachithram in theatres and find out for yourself.

Along with these much-talked-about movies, some hidden gems like Pombalai Orumai are also making their OTT premiere, albeit without any fanfare. Pombalai Orumai fetched a state award for Best Character Actor (Female) for Sreeshma Chandran. Even this accolade did not shine the spotlight on the film, which depicts the events during the Covid pandemic after Ancy Mol, a junior health inspector, was transferred to a rural area. For the performance and the poignant tale, the film is worth your attention this weekend.

Another Malayalam movie with Anaswara Rajan in the lead. The movie also features Arjun Ashokan and Balu Varghese in the lead roles. The film follows the chaotic yet humorous events in a priest’s life after a young woman and thief enter his residence. Despite featuring two male leads, Anaswara got to showcase a powerful avatar on screen.
