In the last few years, there have been some Kannada comedy movies that leaned heavily on adult humour, a trend that audiences have grown tired of, which explains the lacklustre theatrical outing of films like Thothapuri, Raghavendra Stores and Ranganayaka, among others. Here’s a look at a few movies that genuinely entertained audiences in recent times, which reflected in their box office performance as well. In case you missed them when they were in theatres or fancy a rewatch, here’s where you can stream them.

Upadhyaksha

Director Anil Kumar gives comedian Chikkanna the transition to leading man with Upadhyaksha, a film based on his character from Adhyaksha, in which Sharan was in the lead. In terms of story, Upadhyaksha pretty much follows the Adhyaksha template, albeit in Chikkanna’s style of comedy.

Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare

Debutant director Nithin Krishnamurthy’s film created quite a buzz with its pre-release promotions, and went on to do quite well for a movie full of newbies and shot in unconventional style. The story follows a bunch of hostel students and their conflicts with the warden, which escalates, when he is found dead with a note blaming a few for them for his demise.

Achaar & Co

Actress Sindhu Sreenivasa Murthy made he directorial debut with Achaar & Co, a film that the late Puneeth Rajkumar had greenlit. The film is set in 1960s Bengaluru, a time when women began showing more interest in education and even becoming earning members of the household. Sindhu’s story follows a family of 10 siblings and how they come to terms with the loss of the primary earning member – their father.

Old Monk

Director-actor MG Srinivas leads the film in which he plays the sage Narada, who is banished to earth by Lord Krishna, with a return pass available only if he manages to have a love marriage with the blessings of all parties involved, including extended family. To ensure Narada’s doesn’t have it easy, Krishna ensures he is born into a family that will have nothing to do with love relationships.

Gaalipata 2 

Director Yogaraj Bhat reunites with Mungaru Male and Gaalipata actor Ganesh for Gaalipata 2, a film in which the latter plays the son of a Karnataka MLA, who cannot read or write Kannada well. This is something that his mother, the MLA and novelist, is determined to remedy and sends him to a Kannada professor, along with his pals, Diganth and Bhooshan (Pawan Kumar).
