With the fifth season of The Crown on the horizon, people are wondering if the timing couldn't be more contentious with the recent controversies surrounding the British Royals. Dame Judi Dench and former Prime Minister John Major are among the several eminent personalities who have spoken in favor of the Royal Family, critical of how real-life people are depicted in the show. Let’s take a look at the reasons why the Royal Family is worried about the fifth season of The Crown.

1. Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth’s complicated relationship

Family and relationships are complicated for everyone, and the British Royals are no exception. The third and fourth seasons have navigated through the tricky relationship between the late monarch Queen Elizabeth and the new monarch King Charles. The show addresses the then-Prince’s allegations of his parents for their negligence and emotional detachment towards him. Though shown in a fictional sphere, an authorized biography written back in 1994 by Jonathan Dimbleby appears to confirm what the show depicted.

2. Prince Philip’s relationship with Penelope Knatchbull

The late Prince Philip’s infidelity allegations have already been hinted at in the first and second seasons. This took a backseat after the plethora of romantic dilemmas of the next generation came to the fore, but season five could revert back to these alleged affairs. The new season will highlight the relationship between Prince Philip and Penelope ‘Penny’ Knatchbull, Countess Mountbatten of Burma, which has been deemed as platonic by either party. This specific plotline was seen in bad taste by Monarch enthusiasts.

3. Queen Consort Camilla’s role in the Charles-Diana feud

The phrase Annus Horribilis was famously stated by the late Queen Elizabeth in her address at Guildhall in 1992, which happened to be one of the darkest times for the Royals. From three of her children’s marriages breaking down to the ravenous fire breaking out in Windsor Castle, these very real tragic events being televised for entertainment is not something the Royal family is looking forward to.

5. The separation of Charles and Diana

The biggest plot line this season is none other than the breakdown of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage and subsequent divorce. Though no detail has been spared from the public’s knowledge about their relationship, people still strive to learn more about them. The trailer has already shed light on what is to come including Princess Diana's controversial 1995 "Panorama" interview with Martin Bashir. The trailer shows Elizabeth Debicki portraying Diana in the 90s donning the iconic “revenge dress”. The Royal family could be concerned about the backlash they are about to receive for their alleged mistreatment of Princess Diana leading up to her tragic death.
