The duo along with the team cut a cake during the screening of Soorarai Pottru

Director Sudha Kongara and music composer GV Prakash Kumar, who are basking in the recent wins for Soorarai Pottru, celebrated the big feat with fans at a theatre. The theatre was screening Soorarai Pottru on the special occasion of Suriya's birthday today and the duo decided to cut a cake amid a flurry of fans. Producer Dhananjayan was present, too, on the occasion. Fans captured the big moment on their mobile phones and cheered on the team. A video of the same is doing the rounds on the internet.
Soorarai Pottru bagged five awards at the 68th National Film Awards which was announced yesterday. The Sudha Kongara-directorial bagged the awards for the Best Actor (Suriya), Best Actress (Aparna Balamurali), Best Feature Film (Sudha Kongara), Best Screenplay (Sudha Kongara and Shalini Usha Nair), and Best Background Score (GV Prakash Kumar).
The film is inspired by the life of low-cost airline Air Deccan founder Captain GR Gopinath as described in his memoir Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey. Soorarai Pottru has an ensemble cast which includes Paresh Rawal (marking his Tamil debut), Mohan Babu, Urvashi, Karunas, Krishnakumar, Kaali Venkat, Vivek Prasanna, Poo Ramu, Vinodhini Vaidyanathan, Prakash Belawadi, Achyuth Kumar, Dan Dhanoa and RS Shivaji.
In a statement released by Suriya, he had stated, "We are ecstatic with the Five National Awards for Soorarai Pottru. The overwhelming reception for the film which was released directly on OTT during a pandemic, has made out eyes well up in joy.Our happiness doubled at this National Recognition for Soorarai Pottru, as it is a testimony of Sudha Kongara's many years of hard work and creative vision of Captain Gopinath's story.
The film has cinematography by Niketh Bommireddy and editing by Sathish Surya. Soorarai Pottru was released directly on Amazon Prime Video as it had released during the pandemic. It was Suriya's maiden OTT release.
