Phoebe’s eccentricity makes her special, her clothes easily make her the most unconventional and her pure, childlike heart is what makes us cherish her the most. She is a wonderful friend - the kind that will be there for you through thick and thin - and is the perfect combination of funny and wise. With the Friends reunion episode airing earlier this week, fans realised just how much they had missed their favourite friend. Here are seven times Phoebe won us over over the course of ten season -
1. Every time she sang Smelly Cat or Sticky Shoes
Smelly Cat has seen its fair share of revamps, with the original being performed by Phoebe on her guitar at Central Perk. It soon became her signature song and has been loved by fans since Phoebe’s first performance. However, another underrated gem that makes us appreciate Phoebe’s musical side is Sticky Shoes. These songs prove that Phoebe truly doesn’t care what people think and will always do what comes to her mind, even if it is making music that most people don’t understand.
2. When she changed her name to Princess Consuella Bananahammock
One of our favourite scenes from the show has to be when Phoebe, after getting married to Mike, runs down to the office to change her name. When she finds out that her name can be legally changed to anything, she decides to have fun with it. She officially changes her name to Princess Consuella Bananahammock and is overjoyed till she finds out what her surname means. Mike plays his own trick on her, by claiming that he too will change his name to Crap Bag. Phoebe’s excitement at the change of her name makes us believe in her childlike ability to find joy in the little things.
3. Every time she introduced herself as Regina Phalange
Phoebe’s alter ego first makes an appearance in season 5 when she calls up Emily’s aunt and warns her about Rachel’s attendance at the wedding. After that, her alter ego becomes a running joke throughout the series which is subtly woven into the narrative multiple times. Phoebe introduces herself as Regina Phalange to Joey’s Ken Adams and saves Joey from humiliation at the hands of his casting director by posing to be a French woman named Regina Phalange. Ultimately, Phoebe reunited Ross and Rachel by telling the latter that something is wrong with the left phalange of her plane to Paris, which ultimately delays her flight and gives Ross a chance to confess his true feelings. Turns out, Phoebe’s alter ego is much more important than it seemed to be on the surface.
4. When she reacts to seeing Chandler and Monica together
“My eyes! My eyes!” - There is no Friends fan who cannot hear Phoebe’s voice when they read this sentence. Her reaction to accidentally witnessing Monica and Chandler from Ross’s apartment window continues to crack audiences up. So much so that Lisa Kudrow even reenacted the scene in the reunion episode. Phoebe is bewildered to find her friends together but has to immediately switch her emotions so that Ross doesn’t find out about his sister and his best friend. Trust Phoebe to keep secrets safe.
5. When she tries to seduce Chandler
In The One Where Everybody Finds Out, Phoebe is given the task of seducing Chandler and breaking his resolve of keeping his relationship a secret. Not only does Phoebe dress up for the occasion, but she also dances for Chandler and convinces him that her feelings are real. Chandler then proceeds to spill the beans and Phoebe finds herself elated. Phoebe’s determination to follow through plans shines bright in this hilarious episode.
6. When we find out she still believes in Santa Claus
In The One Where Phoebe Hates PBS, she asks Joey what he meant when he mentioned the real deal with Santa Claus. He proceeds to tell her and though she does not reveal it, she is shocked to find out the truth. Only a person with a heart as golden as Phoebe could still believe in magic and Santa Claus. By time and again displaying her knack for believing in things, Phoebe wins our heart every time.
7. When she says Ross and Rachel are each others’ lobsters
Phoebe Buffay once said “'It's a known fact that lobsters fall in love and mate for life. You can actually see old lobster couples walkin' around their tank, ya know, holding claws,” and nothing has been the same ever since then for Ross and Rachel. The couple proves to be a pair of lobsters finally when they reunite in season 10. We love it when Phoebe’s right!
