Actor-director Rakshit Shetty was last seen onscreen in 2019 December when Avane Srimannarayana came out. At the time, he was already working on his next, 777 Charlie, but the Kiranraj K debut directorial was delayed multiple times, primarily owing to the pandemic. The film is now ready for release.
What’s 777 Charlie about
The film was always touted to be about a transformative journey for its protagonist, Dharma, played by Rakshit, after a dog called Charlie comes into his life. This was reaffirmed when the trailer of the film dropped, in which Dharma is shown as a morose person, whose life revolves around going to work at a factory, drinking, smoking, having idli and not much more. How his life changes around when he is entrusted with the responsibility of taking care of a dog, Charlie, forms the rest of the narrative.
777 Charlie’s Mahabharatha connect
After the trailer came out, it was also widely speculated that 777 Charlie is inspired by the tale of Dharmaraja and Kaliyuga from the epic Mahabharatha. According to mythology, after the Kurukshetra war, the five Pandava brothers and their wife Draupadi set out on a journey to heaven. Along the way, all of them but Yudhishtira (Dharmaraj) perish, and he continues his journey in the company of a dog. When he then reaches the gates of heaven, he refuses to go along, unless and until the dog is allowed to join him. While Indran first refuses, it is then revealed that the dog was he lord of death Yama and Yudhishtira is given passage to heaven.
Fans suspect that 777 Charlie’s Dharma’s journey with Charlie, which transforms him, is based on this story.
777 Charlie release plan
The film was earlier meant to be a 2021 year-end release, as Rakshit is known to have a fairly good track record at the box office with December films. However, amid fears of a third wave of the pandemic, the release was pushed ahead and subsequently fixed for June 10, 2022. 777 Charlie will be released as a pan-India film with versions in Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.
