Malayalam films have found maker takers in recent years thanks to the surge in the popularity of streaming platforms. The success of regional remakes of Malayalam films such as Manichitrathazhu, Ramji Rao Speaking, and Drishyam has also been a validation for the industry. The Telugu remake of the 2020 Malayalam film Kappela, titled Butta Bomma releases on Netflix on 4th March and the eponymous Tamil remake of The Great Indian Kitchen also releases on Zee5 on the 3rd March. With no dearth of compelling stories, Malayalam films will continue to raise the bar and the trend of remakes only proves that good stories are independent of language. So for today’s List hai toh hit hai we’ve curated a list of iconic Malayalam films that received pan-India remakes.

The Great Indian Kitchen (2021) - Prime Video

Filmmaker Jeo Baby’s 2021 Malayalam film The Great Indian Kitchen did not release with much fanfare during the pandemic. In fact, several major streaming platforms initially even turned the film down. The slow burner has since become one of the most influential Malayalam films in recent years for its satirical take on marriage in a patriarchal household. Lead stars Suraj Venjaramoodu and Nimisha Sajayan received plaudits for their performances, and the film bagged three Kerala State Awards including Best Picture. The film has been remade in Tamil with the same title, starring Aishwarya Rajesh and Rahul Ravindran, and a Hindi remake is also in development starring Sanya Malhotra and Angad Bedi.
