Ranveer Singh starrer 83 is undoubtedly one of the most-talked about movies of the year. Audiences and fans were all celebrating the film as well as Ranveer’s portrayal as Kapil Dev since its release. Unfortunately, the movie is going through an unexpected problem that director Kabir Khan or producers could foresee.

The 83 team waited for a long time amidst the pandemic to release their movie on the big screen. But only after a week of the release, theatres across Delhi were shut and the director is now on the way to open the film for the OTTs. The movie has also been receiving disappointing results at the box office. Kabir Khan recently opened up about the issue in an interview.

Kabir Khan went against all the odds and rejected many OTT proposals, only to release the sports biopic in cinemas. But now, it looks like he is being forced to release the same on digital platforms due to the current pandemic situation. The director acknowledged the disappointing box office results and said the team was waiting for the theatres to open, though the film was ready 18 months ago. “We wanted people to see it on the big screen because that is how it was designed,” he told Pinkvilla.

He further talked about the shutdown of theatres in Delhi and a spike in Omicron cases on the day of its release. He continued about how Kapil Dev comforted him about the situation, and told him that the Indian team too didn’t earn big chunks of money after winning the World Cup but they earned people’s respect and love, and that is why Khan is making a film on it after 38 years of the victory. The sports legend also said that Kabir’s film is gaining respect all over, which is what to be concentrated on.

Speaking about the chances of an OTT release, the director said that the movie will be released on digital platforms if further restrictions are imposed. He ended on a keen note of hoping people would take necessary precautions while going to theatres.
