Exactly 90 years ago, Kannada cinema made its first stride towards eternity. The film industry's genesis took place on this very day, March 3rd, when Y.V. Rao's Sati Sulochana made its way into cinema halls to become the first talkie in the Kannada language. A momentous occasion, Kannada cinema has since then blossomed into a highly successful and yielding film industry that not only produces great cinema but also nurtures thousands of artists and professionals.
Reportedly made at a modest budget of Rs. 40,000, Sati Sulochana can also be regarded as the very first 'pan-Indian' effort of Kannada cinema. Directed by the Telugu speaking Yaragudipati Varada Rao and written Bellave Narahari Shastri (based on the Telugu play 'Indrajitu Vadhu'), the film was produced by a Marwari merchant named Chamanlal Doongaji (Shah Bhurmal Chamanlalji, too, is credited). The cast, however, includes Subbaiah Naidu and Tripuramba, who are regarded as Kannada cinema's first lead actors, and also 'the father of Kannada Cinema', R. Nagendra Rao.
Kiccha Sudeep, one of the modern-day superstars who has taken on the mantle quite successfully, took to social media to mark the special occasion and also express pride over being part of the industry.
"90 amazing years of Kannada Cinema. March 3rd witnessed the 1st ever kannada release "SatiSulochana". Kudos to all those great legends,and the people behind this wonderful industry to be where it is today. Proud to be a part of this beautiful industry," wrote the Billa Ranga Baasha actor in his tweet.

Coming back to Sati Sulochana, the film was first screened at the now-defunct Paramount theatre in Bengaluru. The film is said to have been shot over a period of two months at the Chatrapathu Studios in Kolhapur and included as many as 30 songs as part of its narrative. Sati Sulochana is a lost film.
