Shivaji Surathkal is a detective character that director Akash Srivatsa wrote and made into a film as Kannada cinema’s answer to Sherlock Holmes and Hercules Poirot. The first film, Shivaji Surathkal: Ranagiri Rahasya, came out in 2020 and was doing well in theatres when the pandemic struck and lockdown was announced. Heavily inspired by Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, the first film was Shivaji Surathkal’s 101stcase. Ramesh Aravind played the title character and he is now back for the second instalment of the franchise.

Called Shivaji Surathkal: The Mysterious Case of Mayavi, this one is set six years after the events of the original. The film is releasing in theatres on April 14, in the run-up to which the team released the trailer today. Shivaji, who struggles with the loss of his wife Janani (Radhika Narayan) has a new case and the responsibility of his young daughter too. The case, as it turns out, baffles him, as he realizes there is a pattern to the killings, but can’t seem to be able to crack it. Shivaji says that the case has a personal connect with him, and at one point it seems that maybe he has a direct hand in it. Is Shivaji behind the gruesome killings, or is mental health teetering and having him imagine it all. Ramesh had earlier explained that the second film has Shivaji in a much more stable frame of mind, with his medications working for him.
