A Journey follows three childhood best friends and long-time acquaintances, essayed by Kaye Abad, Paolo Contis, and Patrick Garcia, who embark on a road trip unlike ever before. When Abad’s character is diagnosed with cancer again, she refuses to get treatment for it. Instead, she takes her husband and best friend along with her for a journey of a lifetime, full of moments of self-discovery, acceptance, joy, and grief.
From skinny-dipping to seeing penguins to planning a funeral, the three friends set on a journey in an RV across the varying landscapes of Tasmania. It is not that hard to imagine and empathize with the shattered state of mind of a person who must fight cancer again after defeating it in the past.
To choose travelling and wanderlust as an alternative to another arduous battle, aided by chemicals, is not an unjust choice, though unconventional. A Journey does not advocate for either side of this conflict. It simply wishes to offer a different narrative to cancer fighters, while making a feel-good film on friendship, adventure, and memories that last a lifetime. And that is where the film’s merit lies.
