For fans of Marvel comics and films, Stan Lee will forever remain a beloved figure. He not only was the man behind so many legendary characters, but also never shied away from making a brief (sometimes blink-and-you-miss-it) and hilarious appearances in features, even TV shows inspired by his genius.
Lee passed away in November 2018 at the age of 95 due to cardiac arrest, respiratory and congestive heart failure. So, here's recalling some of his iconic cameos:
In this scene, Lee plays a security guard busy in conversation with his colleague played by Lou Ferrigno. Fun fact: Ferrigno had first played Hulk in a 1978 TV adaptation of the comicbook.
Prior to his death, Lee had an animated cameo in Spider-Verse, where he played a shop owner of Stan’s Collectibles that sells collectible items including Spider-Man costumes. The scene takes place right after Peter Parker aka Spider-Man's death at Kingpin's death is announced and Miles Morales decides to attend his memorial dressed as the superhero. In the store, Morales picks up a costume and places it on the counter. As Stan begins billing Miles, he says, "I'm going to miss him." Miles replies with a tepid "yes," as Stan continues, "We were friends, you know." Miles then asks him if there is a possibility for him to return the costume if it doesn't fit. "It always fits – eventually," Stan says, hinting at the film's overall theme that just about anyway can fill the shoes of Spider-Man.
Lee was placed right in the middle of a nightclub as a DJ, surprisingly fitting him right into this film's narrative. It's just plain funny to see a man as old as your grandpa in a DJ booth, playing a Flo Rida song for the crowd and introducing a dancer named Chastity.
This really is a scene where you have to focus your attention to comprehend the background actors. Lee appears as a hot dog vendor on the beach, blending into the crowd of people gawking at a mutated Senator Kelly as he transforms back to his human form (Bruce Davidson).
Imagine your surprise when you stumble upon Stan Lee as a guest in one of Princess Mia (Anne Hathaway) and the Queen's (Julie Andrews) events in Genovia. This one is in the early days, when he had just kickstarted his cameo career.
In this film, Lee plays a museum security guard who realises that the Captain America statue has its uniform missing after Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) takes it back for his use. Lee's character just looks at the scene of crime and says, "Oh man, I'm so fired."
As Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man and Rhys Ifan's Lizard fight in the library, Lee (much to the audience's amusement) remains oblivious to the ruckus behind him as he listens to classical music on headphones.
