David, played by Jesse Eisenberg, and Benji, played by Kieran Culkin, are mismatched cousins who decide to go on a tour of Poland in memory of their late grandmother. An unexpected turn occurs in the plot when the peculiar couple's long-buried grudges are brought to light in relation to their shared past.
Searchlight Pictures released A Real Pain in theatres in Poland on November 8, 2024, and in the US on November 1, 2024, following its premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it took home the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. Many critics praised the film, praising Eisenberg's writing and Culkin's performance in particular. Despite spending only $3 million on production, it managed to earn $24.1 million globally.
In addition to four Golden Globe nominations, two nominations at the 97th Academy Awards and the 78th British Academy Film Awards, and Best Supporting Actor wins at each of those events for Culkin and Best Original Screenplay for Eisenberg, A Real Pain garnered numerous awards. Both the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute selected it as one of the top 10 films of 2024.
Eisenberg wanted to adapt Mongolia for the big screen because of the Odd Couple dynamic it portrayed, but she had a difficult time finishing the script. Just when he was about to give up on the idea altogether, an ad for a lunch-inclusive tour to Auschwitz concentration camp popped up on his computer. A third-generation survivor like Eisenberg said that it sums up everything he thinks about being a third-generation survivor, which is: there's no good way to experience this, which made him feel both ashamed and exhilarated by the image. Modern privilege frames every action, making it impossible to fully respect the past.
