A Time to a Kill: A murderer or a righteous father? — a captivating courtroom drama

Joel Schumacher will, unfortunately, forever be remembered as the man who directed the universally-panned Batman films from the 90s, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Nevertheless, the late filmmaker did helm a few cult classics such as Phone Booth, The Lost Boys, The Phantom of the Opera, and The Client. A Time to Kill, which was released in 1996 and is arguably one of his best films.

Based on John Grisham’s 1989 legal thriller novel, the film is set in the southern U.S. state of Mississippi. When two white men brutally sexually assault a 10-year African American girl, her father Carl Lee Hailey shoots the men and kills them inside a courthouse in vengeance. After Carl Lee is charged with homicide, he hires a white lawyer named Jake Brigance to defend him in court. The controversial case gains widespread media coverage across the state and the country. This leads to racial tensions, which are compounded by the fact that far-right white supremacists, the KKK decide to get involved.

The film offers a telling portrait of the American legal system and also highlights the complex race relations observed in the southern states.

Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey essays the lead role of Jake Brigance and Samuel L Jackson plays the role of Carl Lee Halley. The film also features a star-studded ensemble of Academy Award winners Sandra Bullock, Kevin Spacey, and Brenda Fricker, along with Donald and Kiefer Sutherland, and Ashley Judd.

The movie is streaming on Prime video.
