Mollywood audiences, who couldn’t catch Indrajith Sukumaran’s sports drama Aaha, could stream the movie online this month. The film, directed by Bibin Paul Samuel, had released in theatres in November and marked Indrajith’s second theatrical release during the pandemic after Dulquer Salmaan’s Kurup.
The multi-starrer, which is scripted by Tobit Chirayath, also has Amith Chakalakkal, Ashwin Kkumar, Santhy Balachandran, Nitin Thomas and Manoj K Jayan in pivotal roles. The shoot of the movie was completed before the pandemic.
What is Aaha about?
The movie is inspired by the tug-of-war team Aaha Neeloor, which had dominated the sport in Kerala for several decades. The team consisted of manual labourers, toddy tappers and those who worked as caterers, but they were champions for over 15 years in Kerala.
Aaha revolves around Indrajith’s character Kochu, whose momentary slip-up was responsible for the iconic team’s first loss in several decades. Years later, after Kochu endures a tragic personal loss, he is approached by a group of youngsters to help form a tug-of-war team. This gives him a chance to reclaim part of what he lost that fateful day.
The film has Indrajith playing two phases of his character’s life, while Ashwin too appears in two get-ups. Amit’s character leads the young group who learn the sport the hard way in this rural sports-drama. Santhy plays Indrajith’s wife in the film.
In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Indrajith told us, “My character is inspired by Roy (Neeloor) chettan, who was part of the team. Though it’s not exactly his story, the backdrop and where he lived are inspired from his life. Roy chettan was there with us throughout the shoot. He was their star; he would guide us about the sport and provided a lot of help. He is there in the movie too; in a lot of matches, he’s the one sitting on the table.”
When and where to watch Aaha?
Aaha is set to release on ZEE5 on January 26. The movie will go head-to-head with Prithviraj Sukumaran and Mohanlal’s Bro Daddy, which will also begin streaming on January 26 on Disney+ Hotstar.
