For the first time, probably in the history of the Tamil film industry, a Kamal Haasan film is selling more tickets than Rajinikanth's in Tamil Nadu. Yes, Aalavandhan is pulling bigger crowds than Muthu, seemingly giving the former its long-delayed due at the box office.

The re-release of Aalavandhan and Muthu happened on December 8. The Kamal Haasan's cult classic opened to a bigger crowd by earning more than Rs 10 lakh, while the Rajinikanth-starrer managed a little more than just Rs 4 lakh.

According to Cinetrak, the trend between the two films continued even on Saturday. While in two days, Aalavandhan managed to gross more than Rs 21 lakh in Tamil Nadu alone, Muthu earned about Rs 9.75 lakh.

Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth have been the two pillars of the Tamil film industry since the 1980s. The movies of the two superstars have clashed at the box office on many occasions. And Rajinikanth's films have always managed to triumph over Kamal's movies in terms of commercial success. In the meantime, Rajinikath-starrer fell behind Kamal's when it comes to critical acclaim and awards.

Aalavandhan is a special film in Kamal's career and he made it with a lot of passion and cutting-edge technology of its time. The film is based on the novel named Dhayam, which he wrote in the 1980s. Besides playing the lead role, he also wrote the film's screenplay.

Aalavandhan revolves around twins, whose lives turn upside down with the arrival of an evil stepmother. While one goes on to become a decorated officer in the Indian Army, the other turns into a schizophrenic serial killer. Kamal essayed both roles.

In the meantime, Muthu is a typical Rajinikanth entertainer. Written and directed by KS Ravikumar, the film tells the story of a loyal servant, who is oblivious to his generational wealth.
