Aamir Khan is producing Vir Das' directorial debut, and the comedian-actor has opened up about his experiences so far. A recent interview with Das on The Namrata Zakaria Show revealed Khan's unconventional method of production, which places a heavy emphasis on the script and early testing, as well as the project's rapid greenlighting.

Vir Das' personal pitch to Aamir Khan

Das approached the superstar personally to launch the project, explaining the unique aspects of the film and why it required a specific type of support. "Three years ago I called Aamir Sir, and I was like, 'So I have a movie, and if you don't produce it, I don't think anyone will,'" adding to what Das said, Khan responded, "No pressure."

For the first pitch, Khan set a very ambitious timeline for Das. There was a window of opportunity for Das to narrate the screenplay "in 72 hours". A thorough procedure was followed before the final permission was given. "Six narrations later and a test shoot later, he greenlit the movie," said Das.

Obsession with story development

Khan's approach as a producer, according to Das, is laser-focussed on the brainstorming and concept phases. Thus, he is highly involved in the story's development and the script's initial draft. Das elaborated on his obsession with the story. The fixation, he said, "really benefits your writing as well."

After the first green light, Khan had almost no say in the actual shooting. He added, "Production design a little bit, 'cause he wanted it to look right'."

Smart pre-production test

The producer's most notable early-stage directive was a smart method of gauging the film's potential: "He does a smart thing, which is he'll give you a little bit of money, and he'll be like, 'Go out and shoot four scenes.'"

The instructions for this test shoot were simple, focusing on the core elements. "Shoot it on a cell phone. Shoot it, you know, just bare bones, but I just want to see how you move the camera, how you use an actor, etcetera, etcetera," Das recounted.

Crew anxiety over 12-minute film

Nervousness gripped the crew as they prepared the 12-minute test film to present to Khan. Das stated, "We obsessed over it because it was 12 minutes that we were going to show him," elaborating on the anticipation of a long debate that would ensue. He went on to say, "You're expecting, like, a long discussion, you know, at the end of it saying, 'Ha, but this, that, etcetera, etcetera.'"

But it was a quick and clear decision. "Alright," was Khan's simple response after viewing the clip in his screening theatre.

Total autonomy during principal photography

Khan withdrew entirely from the day-to-day shooting after giving the green light. "We didn't see him until the edit. So he'll leave you alone until the edit," Das confirmed.

When asked if Khan would make a guest appearance, Das was playful but noncommittal, saying, "I am telling you that you will have to see the edit."
