Director Aanand L Rai said in a media statement, "After our last film, there were emotions we never fully let go of. Dhanush and I kept revisiting that space, what happens to love when innocence fades, when time changes people. Tere Ishk Mein grew from that unfinished thought." Whether he hinted at Raanjhanaa which re-released in theatres or Atrangii Re which was their last OTT release, remains unknown.

Theatre-goers in Hindi cinema witnessed the power of AI first-hand. They saw it with Raanjhanaa's ending changed during its recent theatrical re-release. In the newer ending, Kundan (Dhanush) wakes up from coma just as Zoya (Sonam Kapoor) stays by his side and sheds a tear. Seeing him come back to life, even Swara Bhaskar's Bindiya smiles and thus, it is a pretend happy ending. The story, even then, ends in that moment - of Kundan choosing to come back to life.
