It recently made major headlines when Fawad Khan announced his return to Hindi cinema alongside Vaani Kapoor in a film titled Abir Gulaal, which is said to be a romantic comedy. While early reports had already started circulating, fans were eagerly waiting for an official confirmation and a first look at the film. The teaser finally dropped and sent Fawad’s fanbase into a frenzy, with excitement soaring and anticipation building for a quick release.

However, the buzz surrounding the film hasn’t been entirely positive. Fawad’s return reignited discussions around the unofficial ban on Pakistani artists in India. Political parties quickly began voicing their protests. Now, actor Ridhi Dogra, who is also part of the film, has addressed the controversy, and here’s everything you need to know.

Ridhi Dogra on the Abir Gulaal Controversy

Starring Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor in the lead roles, Abir Gulaal is described in its official synopsis as a heartwarming tale set in the picturesque streets of London. The film promises a love story filled with unexpected turns, tender moments, and pure magic — a delightful blend of laughter, emotions, and undeniable chemistry between its leads. Meanwhile, watch Churails and Dhoop Ki Deewar on Zee5 for your monthly dose of Pakistani dramas.

Ridhi Dogra recently spoke to Hindustan Times about the controversy surrounding Fawad’s casting and the calls for a ban. She said, “The film’s tagline says, ‘Bringing love back’. The endeavour is to focus on love and the beautiful things in the world because there is already a lot of hatred."Addressing the backlash, she added, "The internet has become a portal for disagreement. Everyone thinks that having an opinion means to disagree. I would like to focus on the love this film has — I hope the film is able to do what its tagline says.”

The controversy dates back to 2016 when an unofficial ban was imposed on Pakistani artists working in India due to escalating political tensions between the two countries. While no formal legal ban was ever declared, the pressure from political groups effectively prevented Pakistani talent from participating in Indian projects.

In 2023, a petition seeking a legal ban on Pakistani artists working in India was filed in the Bombay High Court. However, the court dismissed the plea, stating there was no legal basis for such a restriction.

Sushmita Sen Weighs In

Actor Sushmita Sen also addressed the matter in a recent conversation with Instant Bollywood.
When asked about Pakistani actors not being allowed to work in Bollywood, she said: “Look, I don't know much about all this. All I know is that there are no boundaries in talent and creativity — nor should there be. Because this is the one thing... one is sport, and the other is our creative field where our creativity is born from freedom. So I wish that for everyone — there should be no borders for that.”

Abir Gulaal is set to release in theatres on May 9, 2025. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more updates on this film and everything else from the world of streaming and cinema.
