Ace filmmaker Deepa Mehta’s next will be the adaptation of Avni Doshi’s novel Burnt Sugar

Deepa Mehta is known for making movies that are hard hitting and that contains human and other emotional elements in an artistic format. This time she will be adapting the acclaimed mother-daughter relationship-based novel of Avni Doshi, Burnt Sugar.

Deepa Mehta spoke about what drives her to make movies the most, in a press statement. The depiction of complicated human emotions and their connection is her forte according to her and she is looking forward to diving into the complicated, layered and the dark relationship between the mother and daughter in her upcoming movie.

Deepa mentioned how Burnt Sugar contains touches of ‘razor-sharp humour’ and how the movie carries elements of relationship as old as time. “It grabbed me from its first sentence and I couldn’t say yes fast enough when I was asked to bring the vision to the screen,” said Deepa Mehta.

Ben Silverman’s Propagate Content is set to back the film adaptation of Burnt Sugar. The movie also recently acquired the audio visual rights of the novel. According to a Variety report, the deal was negotiated by Anna Solar-Pont at the Pontas Literary & Film Agency on behalf of the author, Avni Doshi.

Burnt Sugar is based on the dysfunctional relationship between a mother and daughter who live in Pune. The novel is centred on the life of Tara, who is faced with familial challenges as a mother after living life as a wild youth. How Tara attempts to rekindle her bond with her estranged daughter follows the rest of the story.

In other news, Deepa Mehta was recently honoured with a special portrait at Canada House in Los Angeles as a form of tribute to her contribution in films.
