Best known for his performance in films like A Room with a View, The Killing Fields, Warlock and Leaving Las Vegas, among others, veteran actor Julian Sands had gone missing on January 13, while on a hiking trip to the San Gabriel Mountains, north of Los Angeles. Now, more than five months later, hikers have found human remains around the same area.
According to reports, the remains were sent to the coroner’s office for confirmation and identification are expected to be completed next week.
A police statement read, “On Saturday, June 24, 2023, at about 10 am, civilian hikers contacted the Fontana Sheriff’s Station after they discovered human remains in the Mt Baldy wilderness. Fontana Station deputies, along with the Sheriff’s Department’s Emergency Operations Division, responded to the scene. The decedent was transported to the Coroner’s Office, pending positive identification. Identification should be completed next week at which time we will update this press release. No further details are available at this time.”
Although the search for the missing actor - who is also known for his work in TV shows like 24 and Smallville - was temporarily suspended, it resumed on June 17. Ever since Julian was reported missing, eight ground and air searches were conducted by police. Mt Baldy has a reputation of being one of California’s most dangerous peaks.
According to a New York Post, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said that despite the recent warmer weather, portions of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions. “Multiple areas include steep terrain and ravines, which still have 10-plus feet of ice and snow,” they added.
Last week, the British actor’s family spoke for the first time after his disappearance. “We are deeply grateful to the search teams and coordinators who have worked tirelessly to find Julian. We continue to hold Julian in our hearts, with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer,” they said in a statement.
