Grapevine is that Sasikumar, who made a sensational debut as a director with Subramaniapuram, will direct a web series based on a novel, Kuttra Parambarai. Also, we hear, it will have Vijayakanth’s son Shanmugapandian of Madurai Veeran-fame in the lead role. However, there’s no official word yet.
A couple of years ago, it was announced that Kuttra Parambarai, will be made as a web series, produced by Suresh Kamatchi, under his banner of V House Productions. Cinema Express reported the same, calling it a dream project of Bharathiraja.
Both Bharathiraja and Bala were earlier at loggerheads over this project, and neither film went on floors, according to Cinema Express. Multiple reports suggest that the story of Kuttra Parambarai has been written by Vela Ramamoorthy.
"Kuttra Parambarai, set in the 19th century during the British era, will reportedly tell the story of the ‘denotified’ tribal community of the same name, who were notified by the British as ‘criminals’. According to historians, people belonging to these tribes face discrimination even today," read the published report.
In 2016, addressing a press conference, Bala said, he was hurt. "They have pushed me to this stage where I am compelled to go public. Firstly, Kuttra Parambarai is not a story, but a real-life incident. Nobody can claim the right to it saying, ‘I wrote this story!’ This is history. Similarly, (a person) insisting that only I will make this into a film is very childish, because anybody can make a film on history.” He, however, clarified that he had never said he was making Kuttra Parambarai into a film, says a report published by the New Indian Express.
Let's wait to see how Bala or Bharathiraja reacts to Sasikumar's making Kuttra Parambarai as a web series. Notably, Sasikumar is friends with both of them.
Sasikumar shared screen space with Bharathiraja in Kennedy Club. Also, he played the lead role in Bala's directorial, Thara Thappattai. Sasikumar's latest directorial was Easan (featuring Samuthirakani and Vaibhav) in 2010. After this, the filmmaker focused on acting in films.
Interestingly, ever since the release of Subramaniapuram, Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has been raving about the Sasikumar film for what it was. In an interview some time ago, Kashyap had stated it was Subramaniapuram that inspired him to make Gangs of Wasseypur.
