When the trailer of Sudipto Sen’s The Kerala Story came out, it kicked up quite storm, considering its controversial content. The film, according the maker, was his version of events of the ’32,000’ women from Kerala, who were converted to Islam, radicalized and trafficked for terror activities, based on accounts from survivors. Following calls for the team to justify the 32000 head count mentioned, they instead decided to change the official description of the trailer and amend it to the heart-breaking and gut-wrenching tale of 3 women.

Branded a propaganda tool for its anti-Islam stance, the film faced multiple calls for bans on it from various quarters, but managed to meet its date with audiences after all on May 5. Despite stiff opposition to the release and several multiplexes refraining from exhibiting the film, The Kerala Story opened across the country to mixed reviews – with love and hate in equal measures. At one point, it seemed that the team would have to postpone the release, but they managed to stick to the original plan. The Kerala Story did not have a simultaneous overseas release and today, lead actress Adah Sharma posted that the film would be available in theatres across the world starting May 12.

The film explores the tale of three students, who are indoctrinated and converted to Islam at the behest of a room-mate, and what happens to them thereafter. It has apparently been picked up by Zee Network for its post-theatrical streaming rights and is expected to begin streaming on July 7.

Meanwhile, in the domestic market, the film has had a good run, reportedly clocking a Rs 35 crore turnover in its three days at the box office.
