Onam has always been the most celebrated festival in the Malayalam film industry. The festivity season witnesses exciting releases every year and the concept of Onam is celebrated on screen too. It is also the time when many blockbuster movies of the year make their first television releases.
The Malayalam movies have never failed to capture Onam’s real essence on screen and their splendid collection of Onam songs are examples of it. From Onappattin Thaalam Thullum Thumpappoove to Thiruvaavani Ravu, Malayalis have numerous songs to sing along during the festival.

Poovili Poovili Ponnonamayi
The 1978 movie Vishukkani has gifted an evergreen and most loved Onam song to the audience which is Poovili Poovili Ponnonamayi. The song is perfected by the singing legend K J Yesudas, penned by Sreekumaran Thampi and composed by Salil Chowdhary. The song has been part of the celebrations for decades. Various reprisals of the song have also set a trend during the festivities making it evident that the love for this song is never going to fade. The movie is helmed by Sasi Kumar starring the iconic pair Prem Nazir and Sharada.
Thiruvona Pularithan
Sung by Vani Jayaram, the classic song still tops the Onam playlists. The song was written by Sreekumaran Thampi for his own movie Thiruvonam, in 1975. MK Arjunan is the composer and the movie is starred by the iconic pair Prem Nazir and Sharada. The melodious and beautiful tone of the song gives a magical touch to the lyrics and Vani’s voice makes it sound more harmonious. The song talks about the preparations that go into Onam celebrations.
Onappoove omal poove
Another onam song that features Prem Nazir is Onappoove omal poove from the 1978 movie Ee ganam marakkumo. The evergreen song is popular for its visuals too, in which the actor is seen riding on a boat. Sung by K J Yesudas, the lyrics are penned by Malayalm’s favourite poet ONV Kurupp. Salil Chowdhary is the music composer. Yesudas’s voice perfectly blends with Nazir’s on screen performance, creating euphoria for the audience.
Onappattin Thaalam Thullum
Even though this song has a huge fan base and popularity today, many wouldn’t know the song first appeared in the 2004 movie Quotation. The movie is a Vinod Vijayan directorial starring Arun and Sujitha. Though the film did not garner much attention, the song sung by Kalyani under Sabish George’s composition, hit the chords with the audience, and still continues to be on the top list of their onam tracks. The song with its beautiful track and appealing lyrics reminds one of the morning of Onam where families get dressed and gather to put pookalam at their doorsteps.
Thiruvaavani Raavu
This millennial’s song has been one of the most heard and sung during Onam celebration since the 2016 movie Jacobinte Swargarajyam. The song features a splendid Onam celebration of a family in Dubai, and covers almost all the rituals around Onam including the feast, culturals, flowers and games. Sung by Unni Menon and Sithara, the song is composed by Shaan Rahman, and features Nivin Pauly, Renji Panicker, Lakshmy Ramakrishnan, Sreenath Bhasi and Alima Rosmy Sebastian.
