After almost seven months of its theatrical release, director Prasobh Vijayan’s Malayalam movie Adi is finally gearing up for its OTT release. The OTT rights of the film, which has Shine Tom Chacko, Ahaana Krishna and Dhruvan in the lead, have been bagged by ZEE5, which is all set to drop the movie on its platform in November 2023.

While the streaming platform and the makers of the movie, which is produced by Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films, are yet to officially reveal its OTT release date, OTTplay has exclusively learned that Adi is set to begin streaming on ZEE5 on November 24.

Reasons to watch Adi on OTT

Adi is a social satire that revolves around newlyweds Sajeev and Geethika, essayed by Shine and Ahaana. On their wedding day, the groom is beaten by two thugs and this incident leaves a bitter imprint, with Sajeev refusing to let go. How this obsession for revenge plays a role in their relationship forms the plot of the movie.

The movie, like Shine Tom Chacko’s movie Ishq, which is also scripted by Ratheesh Ravi, explores toxic male egos, though not as effectively as the Shane Nigam and Ann Sheetal-starrer, which is available to stream on Prime Video. Nonetheless, the performances of the lead cast and the layered writing help the movie sustain the intensity as well as portray the inner conflicts that its protagonists go through.

In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Ahaana told us that Adi could feel “like a slap on some people’s stereotypical mindset” – referring to a certain gender’s perception of others. The gender politics aspect of the movie is also what urged its makers, as well as the cast, to be part of Adi.

Delay in Adi’s release

Much like its OTT release, Adi’s theatrical release was also delayed. The movie, which was shot during the pandemic, took over two and a half years to finally hit the big screen, in spite of Wayfarer Films producing the movie.

Prasobh, before the film’s theatrical release, had told us that the delay had impacted those who had worked in Adi, especially the actors. Both Dhruvan and Ahaana had limited releases between the pandemic and Adi’s release earlier this year. The filmmaker, however, said producer Dulquer had reached out to them often and was supportive during this time period.
