On June 16, when the Om Raut-directed, Prabhas-led Adipurush released in theatres across the world, in Karnataka, KRG Studios, which was distributing it, took a calculated gamble and dedicated 146 screens (with each having multiple shows in a day) for the Kannada version of the film. In Bengaluru alone, the film had 79 shows in Kannada, which went up to 84 on Day 2, 90 on Day 3 and today, on day 4, there are 96. Despite the mixed reviews, Adipurush, in its Kannada version has been doing fairly decent business, proving that if the supply matches the demand, there will be takers.
A source from the distribution house tells us that Adipurush in its Kannada version has made just under Rs 2 crore between Friday and Sunday, with the overall tally standing at Rs 15 crore across languages. Kannada film aficionados, though, have been mighty pleased with the release strategy, even though the Telugu original was still way ahead with over 600 shows in the Bengaluru region. The shows, though, have been on the decline, over the days, with day 4 down to 821 from the 904 that were there on day 3.
The film, which opened to mixed reviews and a lot of negativity about its modern-day representation of the Ramayana, sub-standard dialogues and VFX effects, among many others, has reportedly been sold to Amazon Prime Video for the post-theatrical streaming rights. There is no firm release date in sight yet, but the platform has been known to stick to on or before 30 days from release for films that have not fared well at the box office, and deals between 50-60 days for others. In some cases, the films are initially put on the Prime Store for rental only, before making them available to subscribers.
