Ever since Karthik Gowda of KRG Studios announced that they’d bagged the distribution rights of Prabhas’ Adipurush for all of Karnataka, netizens have been imploring him to allocate ample number of shows/screens for the Kannada version of the film. On June 11, when advance booking for the June 16 release began, the Bengaluru region, which has 275+ shows for the film, allocated all of 3 to the Kannada version. Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubbali, Belagavi got none. As expected, the Telugu 3D version of the film has got the most shows in Karnataka so far, with about a third of the shows in Bengaluru fast filling already.
The bookings for the three Kannada shows in Bengaluru are far from satisfactory so far and netizens have been requesting audiences to fill these up soon, so that it becomes a viable option for the distributors. It remains to be seen what the final count of shows for the Kannada version of Adipurush will be. On June 11, several netizens had posted that there should be a boycott call for the film if the distributors fail to provide adequate number of Kannada shows. This, however, has become routine during the release of major titles from other languages, like, for instance, RRR and Avatar: Way of Water.
However, the ground reality remains that even when Kannada shows are allocated, the footfalls for these are abysmal, with audiences in the state preferring to watch the film in the original language. In fact, when #BoycottRRRinKarnataka began trending, the distributors had clarified that despite their best efforts to provide Kannada shows, exhibitors were not keen to take it, preferring the Telugu original instead.
Adipurush, directed by Om Raut, stars Prabhas in the lead, along with Kriti Sanon and Saif Ali Khan. The 2 hour 59 minute film is releasing in Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam in 2D and 3D. It will, however, not be getting IMAX screens in the country, as the Hollywood flick The Flash has taken them up.
