Adipurush: Prabhas' film emerges fifth highest at global box office despite controversy

Looks like the mixed reviews that Adipurush has attracted have had very little bearing on the film's box office performance, as the film emerges as one of the top five opening weekend grossers.

According to a report carried by Variety, the Om Raut film has become the fifth-biggest opening weekend grosser over the weekend ending June 18 with collections of over $30 million overseas. The same report quotes Comscore as the source of the information to reveal that Adipurush was only behind The Flash, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Elemental.

On a similarly encouraging note, Adipurush has closed its opening weekend in India with net collections of approximately Rs. 220 crores. The film arrived in theatres on June 16 with tremendous promise and managed to collect around Rs. 100 crores to take the overall tally, including the international collections, above $40 million or Rs. 340 crores (as claimed by the producers).

"Adipurush continues to captivate audiences across generations, crossing an astounding ₹340 crores on the opening weekend at the box office! Jai Shri Ram 🙏" said the official social media post of T-Series, one of the two producers of the along with Retrophiles.

Made at a whopping budget of Rs. 500 crores (as reported by Wikipedia), Adipurush was billed as a mega 3D spectacle that promised to present the mythology epic Ramayana in a new form to the Gen Z crowd. The film includes a vast amount of VFX work and other latest modern techniques but the despite all the painstaking efforts of the team, Om Raut & Co. weren't able to fully convince the audience. That, combined with the controversial dialogues, brought in mixed to negative audience reviews but as pointed out above, the film has clearly ruled the box office.

Released in five languages including Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam, Adipurush stars Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Saif Ali Khan, Sunny Singh and others.
