Ramayana is an epic that has been celebrated in many forms across centuries and several dimensions of Valmiki’s sacred text have been explored through literature, cinema and teleserials. How does one reimagine such a familiar story and tell it to a new generation? Director Om Raut has a challenging task to grab their eyeballs with Adipurush, a retelling of the Ramayana, starring Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Sunny Singh and Saif Ali Khan through motion-capture technology.

The second single from the multilingual, Ram Sita Ram (Ram Siya Ram), sung by Karthik, Sachet Tandon, Parampara Tandon, released to fantastic responses yesterday. While the Hindi flavour was more evident in the first song Jai Shri Ram, the second number Ram Sita Ram sets the record straight, lending a melodious twist to the popular bhajan Ram Siya Ram. Ramajogaiah Sastry is behind the Telugu version of the lyric.

Karthik’s soothing voice is a major asset to the song and he brings a divine dimension to it and enhances its musical appeal with a lot of grace and devotion. “Ho.. Aadhiyu Anthamu Ramunilone.. Maa Anubandhamu Ramunithone..Aaptudu Bandhuvu Anniyu Thane..Alakalu Palukulu Aathanithone,” the song pays a beautiful tribute to the Ram-Sita relationship that withstood many storms.

The visuals perfectly complement the intent behind the song, portraying how Ram and Sita stand by each other through their thick and thin and the trauma they experience when Ravana kidnaps the latter. Ram Sita Ram is an ideal showcase of Hanuman’s courage and his devotion towards Ram too. Beneath his towering personality, Prabhas plays Rama with a touch of restraint while Kriti Sanon’s screen presence as Sita is a delight to watch.

Adipurush releases in theatres in Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Tamil on June 16. Prabhas’ next film this year is Prashanth Neel’s Salaar, followed by Project K with Nag Ashwin and an untitled horror comedy with director Maruthi in 2024.
