A film in which Tovino Thomas played a nameless character, for which he shed weight and made drastic changes to his appearance and then went on to produce it too – that’s Dr Biju Damodaran’s Adrishya Jalankangal, which released in theatres on November 24. The film, which had its streaming partner on board well before the theatrical outing, is now set to come to OTT. It will be on Netflix from December 8.
In the film, which has music by multiple Grammy winner Ricky Jej, Tovino’s nameless character lives in an abandoned railway coach. After a stint in a mental asylum, where he was dumped by the police for loitering on the street, he develops the ability to commune with the dead. For reasons best known to the government, it is preparing for war – no one knows why, when or who the enemy is. The film also stars Nimisha Sajayan and Indrans in pivotal roles. Tovino has described the film as, ““socially driven message that will nudge your hearts and make you ponder as to why… where to and what for”.
The role in Adrishya Jalakangal has been widely dubbed as one of Tovino’s best so far. The actor has had a good 2023, what with his film 2018 being picked as India’s official Oscar entry as well. Up next, he has got Ajayante Randam Moshanam, in which he has not one, but three roles. He is joined by Krithi Shetty, Basil Joseph, Surabhi Lakshmi and Aishwarya Rajesh in pivotal roles in the Jithin Lal directorial. He has just wrapped up Lal Jr’s Nadikar Thilakam. He will now focus on his roles in L2: Empuraan and Identity, the latter coming from the makers of Forensic, Anas Khan and Akhil Paul.
