After Dabba Cartel, Shabana Azmi to play a historical character? Veteran actress says, 'There's a standard set...'

Shabana Azmi played a challenging role as a drug dealer in Dabba Cartel. The series co-starring Jyotika is the story of five middle-class women who start a drug cartel and the consequences that follow. The crime drama series has been receiving positive responses from fans and critics. Amid this, in a new interview, Shabana Azmi expressed her wish to explore historical characters after winning hearts in Dabba Cartel.

Speaking to Pinkvilla, Shabana Azmi said that she wants to explore historical characters. She added, “I am curious about doing a historical character because I feel, for reference, we only have our films.”

The veteran actress further said, "We have such little reference points in terms of historical things that hamare pass ek standard bann gaya hai ke hum aaese baat karenge. (We have such little reference points in terms of historical things, that there is a standard set, for example, the way the characters would talk). I want to explore whether they can speak like us."

The series is set in the Mumbai suburbs of Thane in the 1960s. It tells the story of five ordinary housewives from Thane, who unintentionally become entangled in a high-risk drug ring by using their seemingly ordinary tiffin delivery service to transport drugs. The series explores themes such as greed, ambition, betrayal, the complexities of female relationships, and the darker sides of ordinary life.

During the trailer launch event of Dabba Cartel, Shabana Azmi said that she feels grateful to be at the right place at the right time for the series. "The fact that I am working with younger people who are bringing completely different sensibilities from mine is always very exciting because you learn from each other," she added.

Dabba Cartel features Shabana Azmi, Gajraj Rao, Jyotika, Nimisha Sajayan, Shalini Pandey, Anjali Anand, Sai Tamhankar, Jisshu Sengupta, Bhupendra Jadawat, and Lillete Dubey. The creators of the show are Shibani Akhtar, Gaurav Kapur, Akanksha Seda, and Vishnu Menon. It is produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidwani's Excel Entertainment and directed by Hitesh Batia.
