The recently held 73rd edition of the Emmy Awards had invited disappointment from many viewers for its failure to recognise the talent of people of colour in acting categories, although there were several BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of colour) nominees. Pose was one such show featuring some popular African-American talent, which failed to bag any awards at the ceremony held on Monday, although it was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, among others.

But the show’s snub at the awards did not stop Steven Canals, who co-created the acclaimed show along with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, from saying his piece about the show. Taking to social media, the writer-producer revealed what he would have said as a part of his acceptance speech had Pose won any awards.

His speech offered a moving tribute to the queer and BIPOC ancestors, whom he credits with giving him the opportunity to stand where he is today. He also makes mention of several well-known queer and BIPOC personalities from the past and present and ends with a shout out to the LGBTQ+ community, which Canals is a part of, calling them ‘Unmatched’.

Set in the 1980s and 1990s, Pose focussed on stories surround the ballroom and drag culture in New York cities, telling stories of the queer community and people of colour. The show was met with positive reviews throughout its run and had won several accolades. The show’s third and final season premiered this year.

Although the acclaimed series did not win any awards at Monday’s, it did secure a few Creative Arts Emmys for makeup, hairstyling and costumes.
