After the completion of Laal Singh Chadha, the official remake of 1994 film Forrest Gump, Viacom18 Studios will take on more titles to adapt for Indian audiences.
Ajit Andhare, COO of Viacom18 Studios tells Variety that they are looking to adapt more Hollywood titles, though currently their focus is on Laal Singh Chaddha.
Laal Singh Chaddha stars Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan in lead roles. This film marks their on screen reunion after Rajkumar Hirani's comedy-drama Three Idiots in 2009.
Andhare says the studio is in the process of selecting films they would like to remake from the Hollywood IP available to them. This includes titles from Paramount, ViacomCBS, and Miramax's catalog. "...as a creative team we are constantly looking at which of these could find resonance," he tells the outlet.
Andhare adds that the process of remaking any film is arduous, beginning with finding an title and then selecting a major homegrown cast,
Variety mentions that Viacom18 plans to expand, and is currently in talks with various strategic partners that will bring in requisite skill sets for the same. The studio recently announced it's first partnership with Karan Johar's Dharma Productions for a for a theatrical, broadcast and streaming distribution slate.
Under this they will collaborate on different Hindi language films scheduled to release over the next two years. The films include Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, JugJugg Jeeyo, an untitled film by Shakun Batra, and Shashank Khaitan's Mr Lele.
After Laal Singh Chaddha, Viacom18's other big cast project is Fighter, starring Deepika Padukone and Hrithik Roshan.
