Tamil cinema has always been considered one of the finest film industries in India, in terms of content, talent, and technical prowess. However, Kollywood has always been criticised for its casting choices, especially when it comes to choosing the leading ladies. It is one of those film industries that tends to ignore the extreme and even uncomfortable level of age differences between the heroes and the female leads. Some popular child actors have even grown up to play the on-screen wives of the same actor who played their father.

Many popular stars, including Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, broke the tradition by opting to romance actresses their age in films like Kabali and Papanasam. However, things were not much different when it came to the younger generation of crowd-pullers, including Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith Kumar. But now, there seems to be a clear change taking place in Kollywood.

Will Leo, Vidaa Muyarchi, and The Greatest of All Time change the game for Tamil cinema heroines?

Well, as a Tamil cinema viewer who absolutely loved the onscreen chemistry between Thalapathy Vijay and Trisha Krishnan, I was more than happy when the duo reunited for Leo. After the massive success of the film, it is safe to say that Vijay and Trisha’s fantastic chemistry was one of the best things about the Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial. According to the filmmaker, he wanted to bring a sense of familiarity to the lead pair of his film, and that was the reason why they roped in the actress to play the female lead. It was clearly a brilliant casting decision, as the audiences immediately rooted for the characters Parthiban and Sathya and their little family.

Trisha Krishnan, who is clearly going through the best phase of her acting career so far, had back-to-back hits, including the Ponniyin Selvan films and Leo. Now, the actress is reuniting with Ajith Kumar after a long gap for the upcoming action thriller Vidaa Muyarchi. Trisha yet again redefined the so-called ‘shelf-life’ of a Tamil cinema heroine by bagging Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam's upcoming film, Thug Life. She is expected to reunite with Vijay for Leo 2 as well, whenever the film happens.

Meanwhile, the latest updates suggest that popular actress Sneha is set to play the female lead opposite one of Thalapathy Vijay’s characters in the upcoming film The Greatest Of All Time. The duo is reuniting for the Venkat Prabhu directorial after a long gap of over 21 years. Laila, another popular actress who played some memorable roles in Tamil cinema, has also bagged a pivotal role in the prestigious project.

Well, things are looking bright for the Tamil cinema leading ladies, as the industry is finally letting its most loved heroes romance the actresses their age. And it is heartening to see talented actresses getting back to the limelight and doing more solid work. Hopefully, great times are ahead for the industry and its talent, irrespective of gender and age.
