Dhanush was said to be directing his next movie in 2018 after Pa Paandi. A big ensemble cast, including Nagarjuna, Aditi Rao Hydari, SJ Suryah, Sarath Kumar, and Srikanth, was part of the project as filming got underway. Thenandal Studios Limited was producing the untitled film, which was set in the period before independence. It was reportedly shot in Tamil and Telugu. Music composer Sean Roldan, cinematographer Om Prakash and editor GK Prasanna were brought on board.

Producer Hema Rukmani was quoted as saying, it was Dhanush's dream project that had been in mind for a long time. “It is an excellent plot. When we read the script, we saw why he is so passionate about the movie. Each name in the cast is equally talented and significant to the plot. There is a lot of VFX work involved, and the subject demands such a star cast because Dhanush intended the movie to be bilingual,” she continued.

The shooting took place in fragments, although it was stopped in the middle when Dhanush was involved in Vetrimaaran's Asuran.

Now, after finishing the Captain Miller shoot under the direction of Arun Matheswaran of Saani Kaayidham fame, we've heard that Dhanush has another script ready and would be directing it. The pre-production work for the movie would happen in between Captain Miller's scheduling gaps, a source informed OTTplay.

Dhanush will direct this film, which is probably going to be made by Sun Pictures, before moving on to filmmaker Elan's project.

Speaking about his role as a director, Dhanush was cited as saying that he had always wanted to make a movie but had felt unprepared. “I felt confident in my ability to convey a story with Pa Paandi and knew I had to take the risk. I did a lot of homework. I made short films to teach myself the dos and don'ts. I've been editing all of these short films, which is the most crucial thing. Editing is the best tool for teaching you how to make movies.”

The actor was last seen in Selvaraghavan's Naane Varuven. The story was co-written by Dhanush. The movie had a successful box office run despite receiving unfavourable reviews when it got released.
