After Thamma, Ayushmann Khurrana turns romantic lead in Yeh Prem Mol Liya: 'A Sooraj Barjatya hero is always a green flag'

Ayushmann Khurrana is one of the most versatile actors in the film industry. He was recently seen in Maddock Horror Comedy Universe's fifth instalment, Thamma, where he played the role of a Betaal and earned praise. Now, he is gearing up for the role of a romantic hero in Sooraj Barjatya's upcoming family drama, Yeh Prem Mol Liya. As he transitions from playing a Betaal to a romantic hero, Ayushmann opened up about the same.

Talking to Mid-Day, Ayushmann Khurrana expressed his happiness over working in a Sooraj Barjatya film, Yeh Prem Mol Liya. He praised the filmmaker and said, “Sooraj sir is one of the most successful directors, but he’s simple and hard-working. He works like a nerd, and that inspires me the most."

Speaking about his romantic Prem character in Barjatya's family drama, Ayushmann said, “The best part of a Sooraj Barjatya film is that the hero is always a quintessential green flag. I usually love portraying characters who are flawed and have an arc, but here, the entire family is a green flag.”

Ayushmann Khurrana on exploring different genres

Ayushmann also has Pati Patni Aur Woh Do in 2026. Speaking about exploring several genres, the actor said that the reason he is doing films like Thamma and Pati Patni Aur Woh Do for a wider audience is that he also wants to do films like Andhadhun and Article 15. 

"I believe An Action Hero could have done better. So, I’m mixing up genres — commercial films with projects that are unique. You have to gain the audience’s faith. That’s what I tried to build with Dream Girl 2 and Thamma. That will get translated to my other films as well," he said. 

About Yeh Prem Mol Liya

Earlier, Mid-Day reported that Sooraj Barjatya has already begun shooting with Ayushmann Khurrana for Yeh Prem Mol Liya. The film was originally titled Prem Ki Shaadi. The report also mentioned that the team plans to wrap up the shoot by January 2026. About 80 per cent of the film's work will be completed at Mehboob Studios, with some exterior parts also being shot. They focus on maintaining creative continuity and let the emotional graph of the story sprout in one flow.

The portal also reported that the first song was filmed over seven days, and it featured the lead actor, a large crew, and 200 background dancers. “The song was choreographed in true Barjatya fashion. It sets the tone for the film’s world and introduces the leads in a big, joyous way,” said an insider.
