It’s no secret that Agatha All Along is delivering big reveal after big reveal with its run on Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar (in India). The show, starring Kathryn Hahn in the lead alongside a stellar cast of women and Joe Locke, was one of the most anticipated shows of the year—and it did not disappoint with its first two episodes that aired on September 18. Now that we are in a new week, a new episode has aired. After watching the third episode of the Marvel show, it’s clear that the coven is diving deeper into the Witch's Road, where they’re trying to reclaim their magic, rights, and more. But while they are on this journey, the new episode has name-dropped a Marvel villain who has long been rumored to appear—and it seems like he is finally ready to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Read on to learn more.
For the uninitiated, Agatha All Along is shrouded in many mysteries, particularly the loss of magic that the witches are trying to regain. But one of the biggest mysteries the show must solve is: Who is Joe Locke playing? Someone has placed a sigil on him that prevents him from revealing his name or giving away key details that would uncover his identity. He has quickly become the center of the show because his true identity is still unknown. What we do know is that he trusts Agatha, a fact that makes Rio (played by Aubrey Plaza) unhappy. In a dramatic moment, Rio reveals a dark secret to him, and it is here that Mephisto is first mentioned.
Yes, you read that right. In the third episode, we see the coven in Agatha All Along discover a house on a beach. As they enter, their attire changes completely, and they find themselves trapped in the mansion as there are no handles on the doors or windows. They are forced to drink wine that has been poisoned. During this chaotic scene, Rio warns Joe not to trust Agatha, claiming she is a woman who sacrificed/traded her child to obtain the Book of the Damned, also known as the Darkhold. It is here that Rio mentions an "Agent of Mephisto," saying the name of the big villain for the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
For years, rumors have circulated that the studio was considering bringing Mephisto into live-action. More recently, we even heard that Sacha Baron Cohen had been cast to play Mephisto in a Marvel-Disney+ show. However, there was no confirmation of this, and neither D23 nor San Diego Comic-Con announcements hinted at it. But now that Mephisto has been mentioned in Agatha All Along, it feels like we are about to meet this major villain in the MCU very soon.
Mephisto was also rumored to be part of WandaVision, and it even seemed plausible back then, given that Wanda, aka Scarlet Witch, is one of the characters who has fought against Mephisto in the comics. Mephisto has also clashed with Silver Surfer and Doctor Strange, so we can’t rule out the possibility that both Scarlet Witch and Mephisto may appear somewhere in Agatha All Along—you never know.
Agatha All Along premiered with two episodes on September 18 and continues with one episode every Wednesday until October 25. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
