Agent Amar and Sahasa Simha maker Joe Simon no more; filmmaker collapses during KFCC meeting

Kannada filmmaker Joe Simon, who had an illustrious career spanning over 5 decades, passed away on January 13, 2026. He was attending an executive meeting of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, when he collapsed and was rushed to hospital. He had suffered a heart attack and could not be revived. He was 80. His mortal remains will be placed for public viewing at the Ravindra Kalakshetra in Bengaluru on February 14, 2023, from 10 am to 1 pm, following which the last rites will be conducted as per Christian traditions. Details of the funeral will be shared in due course of time. The filmmaker is survived by 4 sons. 

Simon made his Kannada film debut with the 1977 film Ondu Premada Kathe. Over the years, he worked on more than 100 films as director, actor, or lyricist. He was a mentor to the late Dr Vishnuvardhan, even getting the actor the moniker Sahasa Simha with their 1982 film of the same name. He was also close with the late Rebel Star Ambareesh, following their association on Hongkongnalli Agent Amar. Even though his last film was in 2019, he remained active within the industry.

A Mandya native, Simon, found his way into the Kannada film industry in the makeup department, starting as touch-up boy and then graduating to assistant makeup man among others. Later, he began working in the direction department, assisting on a few films before striking out on his own. In 2013, he was the recipient of the B.R. Pantulu Award in recognition of his lifetime contribution to Kannada cinema. In his 33 films as director, Simon remained unable to collaborate with the late Dr Rajkumar, despite his best efforts.
