Agent on OTT: Hours before Agent was officially scheduled to drop on the platform, the film, which is on digital almost 2 years after its theatrical release, became available

Akhil Akkineni has not been seen onscreen since the debacle that was Agent. Director Surender Reddy’s much-publicized film, which also had Malayalam superstar Mammootty in a pivotal role, took a while in the making, and when it eventually came to theatres, tanked in no time. So bad was its theatrical run that both Akhil and producer Anil Sunkara issued apologies to the viewing audience for not living up to their expectations. In fact, Anil went to the extent of admitting that the production of the film was hampered by the lack of a bound script.
Despite the disappointing theatrical outing, Agent had been picked up by Sony LIV, but the streamer was unable to bring the film to audiences owing to disputes between the producer and distributors. There were multiple release announcements, none of which had been met, so, when the platform announced that it would bring the film for Holi, there was mild skepticism.
However, even though Sony LIV had announced March 14, 2025 as the streaming date, as of 6 pm on March 13, the film had dropped on the platform. The film is now available with Telugu, Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam audio options.
In the film, Akhil played Ramakrishna aka Ricky, an aspiring RAW agent, who gets to work for the agency, albeit not in official capacity. His mission is to capture Dharma (Dino Morea), a rogue agent, who intends to release a deadly virus in the country. How Ricky infiltrates Dharma’s camp and eventually gets the better of him forms the crux of the narrative.
The film also stars Sakshi Vaidya, Vikramjeet Virk, Sushant Singh, Denzil Smith, Sampath Raj, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Anu Prabhakar, P Sai Kumar, among others. After a long break from cinema, during which time he did, however, captain the Telugu Warriors in the Celebrity Cricket League twice, albeit not with much success, Akhil will return with an as-yet-untitled film by Murali Kishor Abburu, which will have a rural setting.
