Agent OTT release date: Akhil Akkineni-Mammootty’s spy thriller to stream nearly two years after theatrical outing

It took 2 years to make, and then, when it finally came to theatres, it failed to create waves. And to make matters worse, when it was time to hit streaming, there were legal hurdles. But now, Akhil Akkineni’s spy thriller, which, also featured Malayalam superstar Mammootty in a pivotal role, is finally coming to OTT. A little while ago, streaming platform Sony LIV announced that the film is finally hitting the platform.

Agent coming to Sony LIV on...

Directed by Surender Reddy, Agent will drop on Sony LIV on March 14, 2025. In the past, the film has had several such official announcements, but had been pushed ahead each time. According to reports, the film’s OTT release was delayed following legal hurdles, with a distributor who’d lost a substantial amount in procuring the theatrical rights, obtaining a stay order. There were also reports of a financial dispute between the makers and the streaming platform.

Mounted on a budget of around Rs 80 crore, Agent did not even make it to the Rs 10 crore mark in theatrical business. Producer, Anil Sunkara had lost close to Rs 50 crores on the film and publicly remarked that the reason for Agent’s box office failure was that Surender Reddy functioned without a bound script.

Since May 2023, Agent has had several OTT release announcements, with the last coming in September, following which there’d been radio silence on the matter from the platform and the makers. Hopefully, this time around, there will be no more delays. The film has Akhil as an ethical hacker, whose big dream is to make it as a RAW agent. After several failed attempts, he is finally onboarded to thwart a mission headed by a rogue agent.

Agent also stars Dino Morea, Sakshi Vaidya, Vikramjeet Virk, Denzil Smith, Sampath Raj, Murali Sharma, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, among others, while Daaku Maharaj’s Urvashi Rautela had a special number.
