Ajay Devgn returned to the silver screen recently as the tactful Vijay Salgaonkar, who will go to any lengths to protect his family, in Drishyam 2. At a time when few Bollywood films were able to put up an impressive performance at the box office of late, the Abhishek Pathak directorial is putting up an impressive theatrical run, having minted more than Rs. 60 crore just three days after its release. Ajay recently opened up about how he thought that the franchise was exactly what Bollywood needed at the moment.

In conversation with Variety, Ajay said that he believed that the Drishyam films could serve as the tonic Bollywood needed to get over its slump. “To talk about tonic, I feel it needs three or four ‘Drishyams’ – that is what is required, I hope this is the beginning”, he said.

The actor went on to say that in the end, films were supposed to be about entertainment. He personally felt that he wanted to enjoy any kind of film he watched, no matter the kind of emotion it evoked.

The actor believed that making an entertaining film was no easy task, as it involved making audiences engaged for at least two hours. The audiences were also very intelligent, so filmmakers cannot get away with giving them drivel. Even when it came to commercial cinema, entertaining viewers by giving them something new was of the utmost importance.

The sequel to the 2015 film also featured Akshaye Khanna, Tabu, Shriya Saran, Mrunal Jadhav, Rajat Kapoor and Ishita Dutta in pivotal roles. The film was directed by Abhishek Pathak.

Drishyam 2 was released in theatres on November 18. After its theatrical run, the film will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video. An OTT release is yet to be announced by the makers.
