Tamil superstar Ajith Kumar paid his last respects to filmmaker Vetri Duraisamy, who recently succumbed to a tragic road accident. A video capturing a visibly emotional Ajith emerging from Duraisamy's Chennai residence is circulating widely on the internet.

Vetri Duraisamy shared a close friendship with Ajith, although the Tamil superstar has not issued a public statement expressing his condolences.

Vetri Duraisamy's untimely death

The fatal accident occurred when the car Vetri was travelling in met with a tragic incident, plunging into the Sutlej river in Himachal Pradesh. According to reports, the car driver, identified as Tanjin, suffered a heart attack during the drive, resulting in the loss of control of the vehicle. Consequently, the car toppled and fell into the Sutlej River on February 4.

Vetri was accompanied by his friend S Gopinath at the time of the accident. Subsequent to the incident, local authorities mobilized a joint rescue and search force, comprising the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, National Disaster Response Force and Home Guards.

After an extensive search spanning more than a week, the rescue team recovered the lifeless body of 45-year-old Vetri Duraisamy on February 12. While Tanjin's body was retrieved from the submerged vehicle, Gopinath, 32, survived the accident with severe head injuries. Gopinath was transported to the Regional Hospital and later admitted to the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC), where he is currently in recovery.

Tamil film industry is in grief

Vetri marked his directorial debut in 2021 with Endravathu Oru Naal, featuring Vidharth and Ramya Nambeesan in lead roles.

Vetri's untimely demise has sent shock waves across the Tamil film industry, prompting condolences from all walks of life. Today, Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan shared a heartfelt condolence message expressing his shock and grief over Vetri's passing.

"The news of the death of Vetri Duraisamy, the son of former Chennai Mayor and friend Saidai Duraisamy, has caused me deep pain. It is an unimaginable grief that a young man who was doing his work with dignity at a tender age met his end in such an accident. I console the father who is suffering from the loss of his son with a heavy heart. He should recover from this soon," Kamal said in a statement.
