Nearly nine months after its theatrical release, Akelli has finally found its OTT partner. On May 3, 2024, JioCinema will host the streaming premiere of the 2023 thriller drama film, which stars Nushrratt Bharuccha in the lead role. Marking Pranay Meshram's directorial debut, Akelli explores how the struggle for survival becomes an ordinary Indian girl's fate as she finds herself ensnared in a war-torn world.

Akelli plot overview

Akelli features Nishant Dahiya as Raafiq, a garment factory employee who helped Jyoti (Nushrratt Bharuccha) escape. Amir Boutrous makes an appearance as Wahab, another ISIS commander; Tsahi Halevi plays Assad, a high-ranking ISIS commander; and Rajesh Jais plays Ranjit Chawla.

Earlier, during an interaction with IANS, Nushrratt spoke about Akelli, stating that she never imagined she could pull off a film like this while reflecting on her time on set. Well, she has actually done it; every now and then, when she watches a scene in which she appears, she gets a rush of emotion to which no one can relate. Thus, it was a pleasure for the actor working on this film.

Nushrratt also discussed her role in the film, saying that she portrays the character of Jyoti, a very simple girl from Amritsar who lives with her mother and nephew. In search of work, she leaves her family behind in India for a less tranquil nation. The moment she reaches Iraq, an ISIS strike occurs. Following that, the plot revolves around her ability to make it through that dark period and return to her homeland.

Nushrratt collaborated on the film alongside Israeli actors. She described her time with them as "wonderful," emphasising that one can learn a lot from actors from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Their shooting styles vary; one will see how they approach the same scenario from multiple angles, use reasoning, and ultimately provide a performance. That is a lot of fun for her.
